What sets Manhattan Closets apart from other walk in wardrobe companies?

Its founders, Gay Roper and Jenny Arditti, who established the company in 2005. When it comes to style/life/space they are the experts, passionate about their unique product and unrivalled service. They know through years of designing and installing American style walk in wardrobes and dressing rooms how liberating well-organised storage space can be, and the positive impact it can have on all aspects of daily life.

What are the distinguishing features of the American style wall mounted walk in wardrobe system?

Rather than the usual UK shelf depth of 20", all our shelves and partitions are the American closet industry standard depth of 14" (355mm). This means that folded items such as sweaters and tee-shirts fit neatly on the shelves, with hanging items more visible and accessible as they hang proud of the system.

What does "wall mounted" actually mean?

The system is literally hung from a steel rail attached to your wall, so nothing need touch the floor, leaving it clear, clutter free and easy to clean.

Is there a back to the closet system?

The system has no back. It's not needed for the structure or support because the system is attached to the wall. From an aesthetic point of view it gives flexibility to decorate the whole walk-in wardrobe as you would a regular room.

Is the closet system adjustable? Can I vary the design if my requirements change?

Yes, the system is fully adjustable. The standard shelves and poles are easily adjustable up and down, and the fixed shelves adjustable with the use of a screwdriver. We can provide an adjustability guide to help you.

How quickly can I have my Manhattan closet?

The lead-time from placing of an order to installation is approximately 4 weeks for walk in wardrobes and dressing rooms and approximately 6 to 8 weeks for wardrobes internals with sliding doors.

How long does it take to install?

The average dressing room can be installed in one day, though multiple rooms may take longer. Our installers are experienced and highly professional, and since all the components are cut and prepared off site the whole process is clean and hassle free. Your Manhattan closet is then ready to use immediately.

Do I need to do anything before you arrive to install?

The space should be clear and the walls decorated.

We plan to move again in a couple of years. Can I take my Manhattan closet with me?

Your wardrobe internals can be moved. Remember though everything will have been tailored to fit a particular space so may need redesigning for the new location.

Does my Manhattan closet need to be installed before the flooring goes down?

Either way is fine, and if you have an existing carpet that's fine too. As the system is wall mounted it doesn't affect the flooring, however for wardrobes with sliding doors we prefer to install at least the track before new flooring is laid.

I love gadgets. What do you have in the way of closet accessories?

We have a comprehensive range of closet accessories that we import exclusively from the US. We are constantly sourcing new and interesting products.

Can I add accessories to my closet at a later date?

Of course. If for instance you decide you need an extra tie or belt rack, we can mail it out to you with an installation guide.

How does the design process work?

If you call us or complete the consultation form we will be happy to discuss your specific project with you and answer any questions you may have. Mindful of our clients' busy lives, we are very happy in the initial stages to work from your room dimensions together with a completed closet inventory form. With this information, we can let you have an initial design and price.

You are based in Oxfordshire, but how far will you travel?

Depending on the size of the project, we travel pretty well all over the South of England. We are happy to work from plans together with a completed closet inventory so a lot of the preparation work can be done before we visit. Obviously we have to charge a small redeemable consultation fee for clients who are far away.

Do you work on a supply only basis for very distant clients?

Yes. In fact we recently sent closets to Ghana and Namibia! We design the closet from the plans and either telephone or email consultation with the client; we then pack the closet components for export and supply it with full installation instructions in written and video form.

I know all your closets are individually designed, but can you give me an idea of how much it will cost?

For a custom designed walk in wardrobe or dressing room of primarily hanging and shelving we estimate £700 per linear metre, and for wardrobe internals to include sliding doors we estimate £1,700 per linear metre. Of course the addition of drawers, baskets and closet accessories may impact on these prices.
